The American Council on Education received a $1 million grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education to embark on a three-year, multifaceted project to examine the academic success and struggle of low-income adults in higher education.
Central State University (Ohio) received a $15,000 grant from Yellow Springs, Ohio, residents Carrie and Robert F. Baldwin Jr. and Mrs. Charles (Marcella) Sampson. A yearly monetary award of $500 will be given to each student with high scholastic achievement in marketing and manufacturing engineering.
Creighton University (Neb.) received a $2 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to help prepare a new generation of leaders for church and society.
Hampton University (Va.) received $5.8 million from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to write, translate, edit and produce 4.5 million textbooks and other learning aids for African students in grades K-8.
Lincoln University’s (Pa.) Public Safety Department will receive a $225,000 grant through the COPS Universal Hiring Program (UHP) to expand the university’s force by three full-time officers.
New York University received a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to create a research center to study the role of culture on children’s education and development across different stages of their lives.
Northeastern Illinois University’s Center for Inner City Studies received $15,000 from SBC Ameritech. The grant will provide technology training and resource development to community-based organizations.
Rochester Institute of Technology’s (N.Y.) National Technical Institute for the Deaf received $1 million from the U.S. Department of Education to promote access and inclusion for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in postsecondary education.
The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Inc., received $15,000 from HSBC’s HSBC In the Community Inc., the bank’s foundation. The gift will be used to establish the HSBC/Thurgood Marshall Scholars Program.
