Colleges’ Success in International Education Draws National Recognition
NEW YORK
Colleges and universities that have been successful in encouraging international study and increasing participation in the international elements of teaching and learning were recognized last month by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York City.
In presenting the second annual Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education, IIE president Dr. Allan E. Goodman said, “The Heiskell Awards celebrate and encourage the most outstanding initiatives being conducted by IIE Network member campuses to increase international educational exchange and global awareness on campus.”
Goodman announced the winners and honorable mentions in three award categories as well as a program selected for special presidential recognition:
• Internationalizing the Campus: advancing curriculum development and providing services to international students. Winner: Chatham College — Global Focus Program. Honorable mention awarded to Missouri Southern State College for its Internationally Themed Semesters; Connecticut College for its Toor Cummings Center Certificate Program.
• Study Abroad: providing innovative programs and services and making study abroad more accessible to a broader student population. Winner: Fox Valley Technical College —Transatlantic Automotive Technology Project. Honorable mention awarded to University of Southern Mississippi for its Vietnam Studies Program and Lake Superior College for its Mexico Study Abroad Learning Community.
• Outstanding Faculty Program: encouraging faculty to teach or conduct research abroad and to integrate their overseas experience into home campus teaching. Winner: Colorado State University — International Development Studies Faculty Mentoring Program. Honorable mention awarded to California State University — San Bernadino for its Professors Across Borders; and University of Richmond for its Faculty Seminar Abroad.
• Presidential Recognition: Carnegie Mellon University — Technology Enhanced Learning in International Education, for innovative use of technology to increase global awareness, with a special focus on students who are otherwise unable to experience study abroad.
The Heiskell awards are named in honor of noted publisher and philanthropist Andrew Heiskell, the former Chairman and CEO of Time Inc., and a longtime advocate for international education. Heiskell is Chairman Emeritus of the New York Public Library and a dedicated member of IIE’s Board of Trustees.
