Tennessee State Honors Million-Dollar Researchers

NASHVILLE, TENN.

Tennessee State University's Office of Sponsored Research has inaugurated a Million Dollar Research Club, inducting 14 members. The elite grouping celebrates scientists and other researchers at the historically Black university who have secured research projects amounting to $1 million or more.

The purpose of the Million Dollar Research Club is to honor faculty, staff and research associates who "are dedicated to advancing the research status of TSU and creating for students a competitive learning environment based on didactic materials, innovations in the field, effective research methods, and practical training experiences," according to the university public information office.

The inaugural members of the club are: Dr. Michael Busby, director of the Center of Excellence in Information Systems Engineering Management; Dr. Satinderpaul Devgan, professor and head of the department of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Baqar Husaini, professor and director of the Center for Health Research; Dr. Prem Kahlon, professor of biological sciences and director of the Minority Access to Research Careers Program; Dr. Lee Keel, professor in the Center of Excellence in Information Systems Engineering Management; Mary Love, assistant professor of mathematics and director of TRIO programs for the Office of Student Affairs; Dr. Mohan Malkani, professor of electrical engineering and associate dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research; Dr. Robert Newkirk, professor of biological sciences and former director of the Office of Sponsored Research; Dr. Barbara Nye, executive director and senior research scientist for the Center of Excellence for Research and Policy on Basic Skills; Dr. Chinyere Onwubiko, formerly professor and head of the mechanical and manufacturing engineering department, now retired; Dr. Edward Risby, formerly head of the department of biological sciences, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, and director of the Office of Sponsored Research, now retired; Dr. Decatur Rogers, dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; Dr. Lonnie Sharpe, professor and Samuel Massie Chair of Excellence; and Dr. Willard Smith, formerly professor of computer science in the Center of Excellence in Information Systems Engineering Management, now retired.
