Benedict Raises $30 Million to Improve CollegeCOLUMBIA, S.C.
Afirst for Benedict College, the South Carolina historically Black school recently completed a successful capital campaign, raising $30.1 million over six years.
"We have attempted a few capital campaigns in the past, but none of our previous financial drives was as victorious as this campaign," says Barbara C. Moore, vice president for institutional advancement.
The goal for the "Fulfilling the Dream Capital Campaign" was $25 million and it was announced first in a silent phase in 1996, and then publicly in 1997. The money helps to pay for faculty and student development, program enhancement, capital improvements and the college's endowment.
Dr. Charlie W. Johnson, chairman of the school's board of trustees was one of the leading benefactors. The former president of Active Transportation Co. and president and CEO of New Concept Solutions, he committed a major gift of $1 million to the campaign in addition to four scholarships for Louisville, Ky., natives attending Benedict. The scholarships are valued at $400,000.
"Chairman Johnson has been a blessing for our school," says Benedict College President David H. Swinton. "He not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. … He has shown great leadership both personally and professionally."
Johnson takes helping students succeed seriously.
"I love to excel in the business work. But to be able to go back and help somebody else, that's what it's all about," Johnson said in a recent interview. "My whole career really has been to try to help kids get an education."
