Bill Creates African American Institute at Cal State
CARSON, Calif.
Declaring that “education creates intellectual wealth,” California Gov. Gray Davis signed an assembly bill last month to establish the African American Political and Economics Institute (AAPEI) on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH).
Addressing a capacity audience at the Claudia Hampton Lecture Hall, Davis recognized the bill’s author Assembly Member Mervyn Dymally (52nd District) for his vision and commitment to promoting education for African Americans and all California students. Davis said he was pleased to sign the bill because “an education helps enable students to become productive citizens.” Davis said an education makes it possible for students to go out and make a powerful difference in our society.
CSU Dominguez Hills Provost Allen Mori and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Selase Williams welcomed Davis and noted his longtime commitment to higher education in California.
Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson joined U.S. Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald, Assembly Member Jerome E. Horton (51st District) and numerous elected officials, to witness the signing ceremony.
Davis proclaimed CSUDH as the most diverse campus in the 23-campus CSU System and said it was his personal honor to sign the bill into law.
African Americans compose 30.9 percent of the student population at CSUDH.
