Grants & AwardsDelaware State University received a five-year, $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for the creation of a DSU Applied Mathematics Research Center (AMRC) on campus. In addition, DSU's College of Arts and Science was awarded a $278,331 Research Infrastructure Grant from the National Science Foundation that will fund the purchase of a Parallel Processing System. Essex County College (N.J.) received a $102,000 grant from the Hewlett-Packard Company for computer technology for use by students taking classes in the college's Center for Technology.Mississippi State University received a $2.5 million donation from Fred E. Carl Jr., a former MSU architecture student and president of Viking Range Corp. The money will endow the college of architecture's Small Town Center.North Carolina Central University received a $537,092 grant from the National Science Foundation allowing NCCU to create a Technology-Enhanced Learning in Science Center that will research ways to incorporate the latest technology for teach ing science to underserved minority populations. Portland State University  (Ore.) received a $500,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will use the money to expand its engineering and computer science programs.Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf was awarded $883,883 from the National Science Foundation to study barriers to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education among deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The State University of West Georgia's Advanced Academy received a $50,000 grant from Sallie Mae to provide the financial backing necessary to keep talented, lower-income students enrolled in the university's early college entrance program.
