Web Site Hosts Voting for HBCU Battle of the BandsATLANTA
In its second year, the Honda Battle of the Bands showcases historically Black college and university (HBCU) marching bands on a Celebration Tour that began in September and continues through Nov. 22. Since Sept. 24, fans of HBCU marching bands have been able to vote for their favorite bands by logging on to a Web site, which is sponsored by the American Honda Co. Inc.
Fans have until Nov. 1 to cast their votes, which will help determine the 10 bands to be invited to Honda's Invitational Showcase where the bands will perform before 60,000 people at the Atlanta Georgia Dome in January. HBCU athletic conference commissioners, HBCU presidents and HBCU band directors will also participate in the selection of the top 10 bands.
The current Celebration Tour has provided 45 participating schools with grants for halftime performances at selected games. The program awards a total of $144,000 in grants to the participating bands, according to officials.
"Honda is excited to be able to assist in recognizing the tradition and excellence of these dynamic bands," says Wendell Bugg, the manager of American Honda corporate affairs and communications.
Each of the top 10 schools will receive an additional $10,000 toward its scholarship fund. Voting in the Battle of the Bands can be done at <www.hondabattleofthebands.com>.
