Grants & AwardsThe Congressional Black Caucus Foundation received a $500,000 contribution from Dell computers to create an online library highlighting the history of African American leadership in Congress. Fisk University's Center for Photonic Materials and Devices received a $622,000 physics grant from NASA to support students and the research conducted by faculty and students.The New York City Department of Education received a $51.2 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the creation of 67 new small high schools citywide to prepare underserved students for success in today's demanding economy. NJCATE, a National Center for Advanced Technological Education at Middlesex County College in Edison, N.J., has received a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education Program. The grant will be used to implement a national electronic clearinghouse that will serve as a resource center for dissemination of engineering technology program models, materials and pedagogical strategies.The University of Alabama at Birmingham has been awarded a $16 million grant from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to lead a 4 ½-year study to try and develop successful vaccines for HIV.The University of the District of Columbia is receiving a $50,000 donation from Harvard law school professor Charles Ogletree. Ogletree, who is chairman of the board of trustees at UDC, requested that half the money be used for scholarships and the other half go to the David A. Clarke School of Law at UDC.
