Hewlett Packard Gift Boosts Black Public CollegesNEW YORK
In an effort to boost information technology resources at historically Black public colleges, the Hewlett Packard (HP) company has awarded the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and its 45-member schools equipment and services valued at more than $2.1 million. The donation of HP ProLiant servers, notebook PCs, and other technology and services will help improve the infrastructures at the fund's universities.
With the award comprised mostly of new servers, HP technology will support e-mail services for student and faculty communications, a prioritized area of need identified by a majority of the Thurgood Marshall academic institutions.
"Information technology can and should be a major vehicle for improving our students' educational and professional opportunities. HP's donation to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund continues our long-standing commitment to equal opportunity in public education," says Bess Stephens, vice president for philanthropy and education at Hewlett Packard.
"This award brings our national campaign full circle. The earlier awards tended to focus on software. This gift will benefit the hardware side of our member's information technology programs," explains Dwayne Ashley, president of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.
