The Virginia-based Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), furthering its mission of nurturing careers of leadership and excellence in science and technology, is teaming up with the California Institute of Technology to host the Research Science Institute (RSI), a six-week summer program for academically talented high-school science students.
Beginning in 2004 from June 27 to Aug. 7, the RSI program at Caltech will convene 35 high-achieving students — 25 from the United States and 10 from other nations. RSI, free for students, will combine classroom training and research mentorships.
The Caltech program complements a similar CEE program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has been in operation for the past 11 years. The RSI at MIT is considered one of the most prestigious competitive science programs for high-school students in the nation. RSI boasts of over 1,400 alumni including student scholars from 46 nations. Selection criteria include grades, SAT scores, teacher recommendations, participation in science competitions and community service. Applicants' SAT scores generally range in the high 1,500s to 1,600.
"Caltech is proud to co-sponsor the Research Science Institute on its campus in June 2004. RSI is a natural fit for us since Caltech is an institution that strongly supports and values student research. We look forward to our new partnership with the Center for Excellence in Education and the ability to serve many more young scholars," says Dr. David Baltimore, president of Caltech.
Students can apply for RSI online at www.cee.org/rsi.
