Bethune-Cookman College (Fla.) will receive $497,040 from the federal government to enable an expansion of its community outreach service programs. The funds will go toward the college’s efforts to develop a Community Services Center and a new Student Union Center. Hampton University School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Va.) has been awarded a $716,557 equipment supplement grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The funds will be used to establish a Biomedical Instrumentation Core Library. The University of Houston’s College of Education received a grant of $2.6 million awarded by the U.S. Department of Education 2003 Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program in response to the No Child Left Behind Act. The grant will allow the College of Education to tackle the pervasive problem of educating bilingual, disabled and impoverished young students. The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore was recently awarded a total of $193,036 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the implementation of an undergraduate research program in human services. The University of Pittsburgh and the University of Texas at Austin received $735,000 in grants for Ayn Rand Studies from the Anthem Foundation for Objectivist Scholarship. The grants will be used to support studies of Rand’s philosophy of objectivism at the University of Pittsburgh and to fund a fellowship for the study of objectivism at the University of Texas. Winston-Salem State University Center for Community Safety (N.C.) has received a three-year $400,000 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Outreach Partnership Center program grant to address health care, crime prevention and education issues to revitalize and strengthen neighborhoods south of the campus.
