Grants & AwardsBergen Community College (N.J.) was awarded a $68,740 grant from the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education to build an online system of continuing professional development that enables faculty to strengthen instruction for English language minority students.Morehouse College and Spelman College (Ga.) are the recipients of a $1 million gift from DreamWorks SKG co-founder and entertainment executive David Geffen. The gift, which will be divided equally between the colleges, will support scholarships and arts programs on both campuses. Morehouse will use the gift to support the David Geffen Digital Music Laboratory at its Center for the Arts, and to establish the David Geffen scholarship fund. Spelman will establish an endowed scholarship fund, a David Geffen Artist-In-Residence Program and support arts programming at the college with its portion of the gift.Northern Arizona University was awarded a four-year, $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to prepare culturally and linguistically diverse special education doctoral students. The Faculty for Inclusive Rural/Multicultural Special-Educator Training (FIRST) grant will fund Hispanic and American Indian individuals, including individuals with disabilities. The Ramapo College of New Jersey Center for Business and Public Policy was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Ernst & Young LLP for the examination of issues that effect the economic well being and quality of life of New Jersey's citizens. The Wachovia Foundation made a $1 million commitment to Winston-Salem State University's (N.C.) $35 million capital campaign. The gift will be used to establish the Wachovia Scholars Program in the School of Business and Economics and to establish a Wachovia Teaching Fellows Scholarship program, a Wachovia Distinguished Professorship, a Wachovia Symposium and Lecture Series and a Wachovia Research Fellowships program.
