California State University, Northridge has received a $45,000 grant to develop a program to teach elderly immigrants English and prepare them for U.S. citizenship. The two-year grant from Temple University’s Center for Intergenerational Learning was awarded to Northridge health science professor Deborah Sheets and CSUN’s Center for Community Service Learning. Northridge was one of only four institutions nationwide selected to receive such a grant from Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization for Elders).
The Fellows Program of the American Council on Education (ACE) received a $905,600 grant from Lumina Foundation for Education. The centerpiece of the effort is the establishment of the ACE/Lumina Fellows, which will serve to increase the pool of highly qualified community-college leaders. The ACE Fellows Program, one of the longest-running individualized leadership-development programs in the United States, is designed to identify and prepare senior leadership for the nation’s colleges and universities.
Lehigh University’s (Pa.) College of Business and Economics received a $10 million endowment from Wall Street dealmaker Joseph Perella and his wife, Amy. The college will use interest from the Perellas’ donation to fund a minimum of four endowed positions for finance professors. That will expand the nine-member finance department to at least 13 professors and increase the number and types of undergraduate and graduate courses.
Philander Smith College (Ark.) received a $45,000 grant for its capital fund-raising campaign from the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation Board of Trustees. The Frueauff grant will be used to complete a $1 million matching-fund grant awarded jointly by the Bush Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation at the beginning of the campaign.
