The Morgan State University (Md.) Clarence Mitchell Jr. School of Engineering, in partnership with the University of Michigan, received a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The partnership with the MSU Industrial Engineering Department and the ERC Reconfigurable Manufacturing System at Michigan will explore research initiatives in Web-enabled manufacturing labs, vision systems, and multimedia learning modules for reconfigurability in advanced manufacturing systems through the exchange of knowledge, faculty and students.
Empire State College (N.Y.) received the largest gift in its history from one of its alumni. The Susan and John Turben Family Foundation has pledged $1 million in unrestricted funds for the college's programs and initiatives. Dr. Susan H. Turben, president of Turben Developmental Services in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, was among the first three graduates of Empire State College. Empire State College provides programs to adult learners.

Southern University (La.) and Michigan Tech received a $3.6 million award from the National Science Foundation to work in the area of sustainable futures. The award is part of NSF's Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program. The project will focus on developing the Sustainable Futures Model, which recognizes the need to address complex sustainability issues via research on industrial, societal and environmental systems as well as integrative efforts. The Sustainable Futures IGERT will focus on educating engineers and policy-makers to consider collaboratively life-cycle product issues and policy decisions.
The University and Community College System of Nevada was recently awarded a $7,500 grant from Lumina Foundation for Education to conduct a one-year planning period for the College Goal Sunday program. The program is a one-day event that invites college-bound students across the state to local centers where they can receive free assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
