Morehouse College Earns National Academic Champion Title

ORLANDO, Fla.
After a three-day competition last month among the best and brightest academic all-stars from historically Black colleges and universities, a team of students from Morehouse College in Atlanta earned the national champion title at the 15th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) in Orlando, Fla.
Winning the best two-out-of-three games against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morehouse College showcased its intellectual skills by quickly and accurately answering 10-point "toss-up" questions on world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African American history and culture. Morehouse College advanced to the finals after prevailing against 63 top teams from the nation's HBCUs. This is the third consecutive year the school has won the competition.
As the HCASC National Champion, Morehouse College took home a $50,000 grant, while runner-up University of Maryland Eastern Shore won a $25,000 grant. Remaining teams earned grants ranging from $3,000 to $15,000. Through the program more than $300,000 in institutional grants are awarded annually to participating schools.
The competition is celebrating its 15th year of bringing together educators, HBCU alumni, Honda associates, HCASC program alumni and members of the educational community who volunteer as game officials, team liaisons and event handlers.
"We are excited to celebrate 15 consecutive years of great young minds coming together and making important connections that shape their future and America's future," said Eric Conn, assistant vice president of National Advertising for American Honda Motor Co. Inc.
Since its inception in 1989, approximately 50,000 HBCU students have taken part in the HCASC and nearly $3.5 million in grants have been awarded to the schools. The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) and the Association of College Unions International are partners to the program.
