Professional Appointments

Association

Dr. George C. Hill , a professor of microbiology at Meharry Medical College, has been elected to membership in the prestigious Institute of Medicine, an affiliate of the congressionally chartered National Academy of Sciences. He is one of 55 health professions scholars across the nation elected to membership in IOM this year.  Hill earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Rutgers University; a master's degree in parasitology and biochemistry from Howard University; and a doctorate in biochemistry from New York University. He also did postdoctoral work in biochemistry at the University of Kentucky and Molteno Institute at Cambridge University in Great Britain.


Honors


Robert M. Ruggles, dean of the School of Journalism, Media, and Graphics Arts at Florida A&M University, has been named The Freedom Forum Journalism Administrator of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding administrative leadership in the advancement of journalism education. Ruggles has a bachelor's and a master's degree, both in journalism and both from the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Herman L. Totten, regents professor and associate dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas, is one of two 1999 recipients of the Association for Library and Information Science Education Award for Teaching Excellence. Totten earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Wiley College; and a master of library science, and a doctorate in education and library science, both from the University of Oklahoma.
