Michigan Housing Authority to Provide Internet Access

LANSING, Mich.
Many affordable housing rental units throughout Michigan will get high-speed Internet access under the direction of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm announced earlier this month.
The MSHDA board has modified its direct lending programs for contractors that now require them to install the wiring and connectivity necessary for high-speed Internet access in newly constructed multifamily rental units. Additionally, MSHDA is conducting a study in six existing MSHDA-financed rental developments in Flint to benchmark the best means of delivering high-speed Internet access to existing affordable rental housing units in Michigan.
"Connecting all Michigan families and neighborhoods to the Internet will help to bridge the technology gap in our high-tech new world," Granholm said. "MSHDA's strong vision, leadership and staff will provide this lifeline to our information-driven economy."
Granholm had stated previously in her State of the State address that the state would ensure high-speed Internet service made available by 2007 to every corner of Michigan.
"We are pleased to play a role in making the governor's goal a reality. The goal is to test and develop models that could be applied to these and other rental properties in MSHDA's portfolio," said MSHDA's acting executive director Rick L. Laber.
