Delaware State University has received a three-year $250,180 grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct research on how plant viruses could be used to help in the application of plant vaccines. The grant will enable DSU to establish a functional virus and molecular biology research and training laboratory and will also give DSU students the opportunity to contribute to solving a serious plant disease epidemic in Africa.

The New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is the recipient of a $3.2 million grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey to establish a Center for Humanism. The grant, the largest single grant ever awarded by the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, will be matched by a $1.2 million commitment for student scholarships from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. This initiative will focus exclusively on training doctors in compassionate care and becoming medical and scientific experts on humanism in medicine.

North Carolina A&T State University has been awarded a $79,000 two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the City of Greensboro's Occupational Safety and Health Program for the assessment of the Greensboro Lead Safe Housing program. Greensboro was awarded a HUD grant in 2001 to implement a lead-safe housing program. A&T's grant is the result of a collaborative effort between the university and the city.

Prince George's Community College (Md.) has been selected as one of eight colleges to receive a grant that will promote service learning and civic responsibility. The three-year $12,000 grant is part of a $1.2 million national project, "Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning," sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, with funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The education department at Stillman College (Ala.) was awarded $10,000 from the Oceanic Heritage Foundation. The grant will be used in the Stillman Language-Literacy Center, which hosts a four-week intensive after-school literacy enhancement program, to develop innovative instruction.
