Hispanics, Blacks Underrepresented Among Cal State FacultyLONG BEACH, Calif.
Black and Hispanic teachers at California State University are underrepresented despite an increase in minority hiring by the nation's largest public university system over the past 16 years, according to a report released last month.
The study, prepared by the California Research Bureau, examined the gender and ethnic makeup of CSU between 1985 and 2001, and found it was still struggling to raise the numbers of traditionally underrepresented minorities that reflect the state's population. Asians, for example, make up 11 percent of California's 35 million population, and the report found 12 percent of CSU's 22,814 faculty members are Asian. But it also found that only 7 percent of CSU's faculty are Hispanic, while that ethnic group makes up 31 percent of the state's population. Blacks account for 7 percent of California's population but only 4 percent of CSU faculty.
"For the traditionally underrepresented groups ... the challenge of recruitment still remains, judging by the small number recruited and the low percentages," the report said. "The challenge for the CSU system is how to keep up with the rapidly changing demographics in California and at the local level."
