Professional Appontments
Gilberto Cardenas has been named assistant provost and director of the newly established Institute for Latino Studies and Julian Samora Chair of Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He was previously an associate professor of sociology and executive director of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research at the University of Texas. Cardenas earned a bachelor’s in sociology from California State University-Los Angeles and master’s and doctorate from Notre Dame.
Dr. Billie J. Hooker has been appointed vice president for university advancement at Delaware State University. She comes to Delaware from Bennett College, where she was vice president for development. Hooker earned a bachelor’s in English from Albany State College in Georgia, a master’s in library service from Atlanta University and a doctorate in educational administration from Ohio State University.
Anita J. Jenious is the new associate director of the Opportunity Development Center at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Most recently, she was director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action at Tennessee State University. Jenious earned a bachelor’s with a double major in political science and sociology and a juris doctorate from the University of Tennessee.
John A. Johnson has been appointed vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Bloomfield College in New Jersey. For the past 13 years, he served as an administrator at New York University, most recently as assistant dean in the school of individualized study. Johnson earned a bachelor’s in music education and a master’s in education administration, both from New York University.
Dr. James B. Parham has been appointed dean of the Business School at Norfolk State University in Virginia. Prior to this appointment, he was dean of business and professor of management at Hampton University. Parham earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Central State University, a master’s degree in criminal justice from Eastern Kentucky University, a master’s of business administration from National University and a doctorate in business administration from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Curtis A. Smith Jr. has been appointed associate dean of the school of graduate studies at Concordia University-River Forest, Ill. Previously, he was director of Chicago School Leadership Program at Concordia. Smith earned a bachelor’s in industrial education from Chicago Teachers College, a master’s in education administration from Roosevelt University and a doctorate in educational administration from Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Clemmie Solomon has been appointed dean of student life at the Community College of Philadelphia. Prior to this appointment, he had been acting dean of students and assistant to the dean of students. Solomon earned a bachelor’s degree from Central State University in history education, a master’s in counselor education from the University of Dayton and a doctorate in education policy from the University of Maryland.
Honors
Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III,
president of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County has been awarded the 1999 Reginald H. Jones Distinguished Service Award by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. The annual award honors an individual whose contributions and leadership most merit national recognition in the nationwide effort to build a diverse corps of world-class engineers. Hrabowski earned a bachelor’s in math from Hampton University, a master’s in math and a doctorate in higher education administration and statistics, both from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign.
Harry G. Robinson, a Howard University professor and former dean of the School of Architecture, is the 1999 recipient of the Richard T. Ely Educator of the Year Award. The award given by a professional land economics society founded in 1930, Lambda Alpha, was presented recently in London. Robinson earned a bachelor’s in architecture and a master’s in city planning, both from Howard University. He also earned a master’s in city planning and urban design from Harvard University.
