California State University, Dominguez Hills, in Carson, Calif., and El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., have received a joint, five-year, $2.15 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to bolster teacher training.
North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., received a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop and enhance academic programs and support systems, from enhancing the school's fund-raising capabilities to developing state-of-the-art laboratories for classroom use.
Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., received donations totaling $1.95 million from college trustee and alumnus Henry Zachs to support multicultural initiatives, including construction of a new Hillel House and the conversion of two existing campus buildings into cultural houses for Hispanic and Asian American students.
Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind., received a $1.4 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. for programs intended to strengthen Christian character and renew the intellectual vigor of church-related colleges and universities.
Claflin College in Orangeburg, S.C., received a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor to establish the institution's first-ever endowed chair. The endowed chair will be in computer science and mathematics. The college also received $250,000 from Dr. James Elmore and his wife to construct a new campus chapel. In addition, Claflin received $150,000 from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations in Jacksonville, Fla., to help pay off the school's living and learning center.
Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, received a $950,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment-United Negro College Fund to upgrade its computer systems so that they are Y2K compliant. The grant also will be used to help make the college more accessible to people with disabilities.
Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y., received $540,000 grant from the National Institute on Aging to help make the institution a leading center for graduate and postgraduate study in ethnogerontology, the study of the role of culture and ethnicity in human development.
