Calhoun Community College (Ala.) has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to fund the college's new Computer Science, Mathematics and Technology (CMT) Academic Rewards program. The program is designed to increase the number of well-prepared graduates in technology, computer specialties and mathematics by offering 40 annual scholarships and a variety of support services.

The Community College of Allegheny County (Pa.) has received a $40,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Pittsburgh Race for the Cure® to fund scholarships for CCAC allied health programs directly related to the detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The Leadership Alliance received a five-year $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support its National Symposium, an annual event where minority undergraduates from across the country present findings from scientific research projects.

LeMoyne-Owen College (Tenn.) received a $2.3 million National Science Foundation grant to enhance its infrastructure in the natural sciences and provide on-campus research training. The program, LOC SMART-UP (Strengthening Minority Access to Research Training through Undergraduate Programs at LOC), is designed to provide a better foundation for African American students, and especially women, in math and science. 

Shaw University (N.C.) is one of 47 colleges nationwide to receive a $60,000 Hewlett Packard technology grant for equipment that will integrate modern technology and data acquisition into the curriculum.

South Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington have received $500,000 from the U.S. Congress to produce a documentary detailing the stories of African Americans who trained at Montford Point, N.C., between 1942 and 1949 and became the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.
