The American Association for the Advancement of Science (Washington, D.C.) has been awarded a three-year, $400,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to help establish a new Center for Advancing Science and Engineering Capacity. The center will provide consulting services to individual universities and colleges seeking to increase the participation of U.S. students, especially women and underrepresented minorities, in science and engineering careers.

Coppin State University (Md.) received a $2.5 million National Science Foundation grant for its Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Project to strengthen the university's mathematics, computer science and natural science programs.

Essex County College (N.J.) is the recipient of a three-year $745,444 federal Health and Human Services grant that will boost offerings for nursing students while also providing additional student retention services.

Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) received two grants from the Illinois Arts Council totaling $22,490 to help celebrate its 10th year of bringing national and local entertainment to the southwest suburbs of Palos Hills.

Mt. San Antonio College (Calif.) Regional Health Occupations Resource Center received a $137,000 grant from the California Endowment and a $150,000 grant from the California Wellness Foundation for health care interpreters and nursing programs in the local area.

North Carolina Central University was awarded a $2.1 million No Child Left Behind grant from the U.S. Department of Education to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers for high-need schools.

Stanford Law School (Calif.) received a $43.5 million grant from Charles T. Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, and his wife, Nancy B. Munger, to support construction of a new graduate residence hall that will house law, business and other graduate students.
