Howard, Other HBCUs Launch Initiative in Teaching and Learning

WASHINGTON
The Howard University Graduate School has joined Jackson State University, Talladega College and Xavier University of Louisiana in a major initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. Titled "Learning Communities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academic Achievement (LCSAA), the purpose of the initiative is to provide an opportunity for faculty members and future faculty members at the partner institutions to engage in improving and creating new teaching and learning strategies to enhance student academic achievement in STEM fields. The project will link with several national movements to enhance student learning, including those advanced by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

U.S. Department of Education data show that historically Black colleges and universities enroll almost 15 percent and graduate almost 25 percent of African American students in the nation at the baccalaureate level, despite comprising less than 3 percent of all institutions of higher education. These institutions, therefore, offer major opportunities for addressing the issue of academic achievement among African Americans in STEM fields — disciplines in which they nationally have underachieved.
