Microsoft Launches Research Center in India

BANGALORE, India
The Microsoft Corp. opened a research lab in India last month, making it only the third Microsoft research facility outside the United States. Microsoft Research India, situated in Bangalore, will handle long-term basic and applied research in coordination with both the Indian government and Indian higher education institutions.

Several other U.S. technology companies also have their engineering and development centers in Bangalore, and the South India city is home to a Hewlett-Packard laboratory. The Microsoft facility is expected to focus on geographical information systems, multilingual systems, sensor networks and technologies for emerging markets, according to the company.

"The information technology research community in India is really blossoming right now, and the country's Ph.D. programs are poised for strong growth as well," according to a statement by P. Anandan, the managing director of Microsoft Research India. "We feel a great deal of synergy exists with the Indian academia and government in our goals of advancing basic and applied research."

The Microsoft facility will also finance academic research in communication and technology. Already it has awarded $250,000 for projects at the Indian Institutes of Technology and three other research centers, Microsoft company officials said.
