Boston Medical Center received more than $870,000 from the National Institutes of Health to study and develop treatments for patients with co-occurring substance abuse disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder in the primary care setting.

California State University, Northridge has received a $144,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to assist CSUN biology labs’ continued research of cell interaction by studying sea urchins   and their embryos. In addition, the California Postsecondary Education Commission donated more than $99,000 to the  “Sustainability and Dissemination in the Development of Teacher/Student Researchers” project that gives teachers and students in grades four through seven the opportunities to teach and learn science and research.
Duke University (N.C.) received a $23.5 million grant from William H. Gross, manager of the world’s largest bond mutual fund, and his wife Sue. Sixty-four percent ($15 million) of the gift will endow undergraduate scholarships and another $5 million will endow scholarships for medical students. The $3.5 million balance of the gift will be used to support faculty members in Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and other priorities.

The Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Science & Engineering Research is receiving $1 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to study the rehabilitation needs of severely wounded military personnel who are returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The goal of the research will be to optimize rehabilitation and quality of life for veterans who suffer the loss of a limb in combat.

Miami Dade College (Fla.) received a $50,000 grant from the Florida Department of Education to help fund a program aimed at improving literacy skills of at-risk middle school students. The grant is unique in that it will work directly with the student and their parents.
