Howard University Takes in Dozens from New Orleans
WASHINGTON
Dozens of students from historically Black colleges and universities in the hurricane ravaged south are applying for admission — at least temporarily — to Howard University in the nation’s capital, university officials said late last week.
At least 51 applications had been processed and were expected to be approved, university spokeswoman J.J. Pryor said. Howard University students have volunteered to share their residence hall rooms with the incoming students.
Many of the students were expected to come from Dillard University and Xavier University of Louisiana, which are both located in New Orleans.
“Howard University extends its deepest sympathies to all those who have been impacted by the disaster wrought by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf coast states,” Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert said in a statement. “We pray for them and trust that they will find the strength to sustain them through this difficult time.”
The university was offering financial aid, housing, clothing, books and computers on a case-by-case basis to the students, Pryor said.
“We’re just trying to provide as much assistance and help as we possibly can,” Pryor said.
It’s been difficult to contact university officials in New Orleans, but Pryor said they have notified the United Negro College Fund that Howard was accepting students.
