Congressman and College President Could Mediate Flag Dispute
COLUMBIA, S.C. — U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn and College of Charleston President Alex Sanders could be brought in as mediators by the governor to help settle the Confederate flag issue.
“I guess it’s because I’m such a universally loved and admired person, right?” Sanders joked last month. “And also it’s because I’m uniquely situated to bring the factions together.”
That part wasn’t a joke. Sanders is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He said he will help out the governor if needed, but thinks it would be a difficult task.
Governor’s spokeswoman Nina Brook confirmed that Hodges also has asked Clyburn, D-S.C., for help. But she added that he also has talked to many people about resolving the issue.
Clyburn was not available to comment, but South Carolina’s only Black congressman, told The (Charleston) Post and Courier he had talked to Hodges several times last month about the flag, but would not confirm he was serving in any official capacity.
“Whatever the governor asks me to do, I’ll gladly do,” he said.
