by Associated Press , September 20, 2005

BOULDER, Colo.

The University of Colorado enrolled slightly more ethnic minorities this fall than last, according to figures recently released.

Thirty-one more minority undergraduates were enrolled for a total of 3,572, up 1 percent from last year. There were 397 African American undergraduates enrolled, making up about 1.4 percent of the 28,624 degree-seeking students enrolled this fall.

There were 1,532 Asian American students enrolled; 1,461 Hispanic and Latino undergraduates; and 182 American Indians.

Overall, minorities are 14.2 percent of undergraduate and graduate students, up from 13.8 percent in 2004.

Enrollment of transfer students fell about 10 percent to 1,304 while new graduate student enrollment fell 5 percent to 1,209.

Graduate student enrollment fell 3 percent to 4,401. International graduate students numbered 582, down from 648 last year.

CU officials said 142 new undergraduates and three law students planning to attend New Orleans area schools enrolled on the Boulder campus after they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The students included 35 Colorado residents.
