Dr. Joan PrinceDr. Joan Prince, vice chancellor for global inclusion and engagement at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is on the verge of utilizing her skills on the world stage.
Prince, sworn in as a temporary senior adviser to the State Department on Sept. 19, is awaiting Senate confirmation as one of five U.S. alternate representatives to the United Nations. The alternates fill in at the U.N. when Ambassador Susan Rice is unavailable.
Prince, a 2011-12 ACE fellow, will take a leave of absence from school to carry out her responsibilities as the U.N. active session lasts from September through December. Her primary duties would be assisting with U.S. diplomacy and engaging delegates from other nations.
President Obama nominated Prince for the position with an endorsement from U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis. Prince earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, a master’s in clinical laboratory sciences and a Ph.D. in urban education — all at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Prince hopes to highlight issues of global health and education during her U.N. stint.
