JACKSON, Miss.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center will join nine other
hospitals across the country in a 29-month study on disparities in
health care for minorities.
“Mississippi is the ultimate picture of health disparities,'' said Dr. Dan Jones, vice chancellor for health affairs at UMC.
Jones said those disparities include a high minority population, high poverty and being located in the South.
He said the unhealthiest states are in the South, and studies have
shown that minorities and the poor generally receive lower quality
health care than the population as a whole.
The program, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to
develop and test potential solutions to racial and ethnic disparities
in how health care is delivered.
More than 120 hospitals applied.
