Tuberculosis Diagnosed on UMBC Campus

CATONSVILLE, Md. — Officials at the University of Maryland Baltimore County say someone on the Catonsville campus has contracted tuberculosis.

UMBC confirmed the diagnosis in a letter sent to students and faculty on Tuesday. The letter did not say if the sick person was a student, faculty or staff member, nor did it say where the person contracted the disease.

The university is working with the Baltimore County Department of Health to isolate and tread the infected person. Officials are also notifying people who may have been in contact with the infected person so they can get tested.

Tuberculosis is an airborne disease that affects the lungs. Symptoms include cough, chest pain, bloody mucus, weight loss, chills and fever. Officials say it is difficult to contract the disease through ordinary campus life.
