Hurricane Relief Continues
The Department of Education extended paperwork deadlines for schools and lenders in Hurricane Rita’s damage zone. It previously did so for schools affected by Hurricane Katrina. Anyone who missed the Sept. 30 deadline for filing a Fiscal Operations Report for 2004-2005 and Application to Participate for 2006-2007, Pell Grant reports and disbursement records, or Federal Direct Loan Records will get until Dec. 1.
Affected institutions will also get an additional 90 days from their previous deadline to submit their annual compliance audit. Institutions that can’t meet the new deadlines need to contact federal officials and explain why.
Efforts to help hurricane victims continue. U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., introduced the Hurricane First Responder Surviving Spouse Student Loan Relief Act, referred to the Education and the Workforce Committee. The bill would cancel debt for student loans to surviving parents and spouses of police, fire and other rescue personnel killed or permanently disabled while providing relief to victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. McCarthy hadn’t estimated how many people could be affected.
