Head of NASA Research Center Declines Presidency of Alabama A&M
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.
Dr. Julian Earls, director of the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, has turned down an offer to become president of Alabama A&M University.
Earls, who is retiring from the center at the end of the year, sent a letter to the board of trustees saying that because of family considerations, the position was not appropriate for him at this time, Clinton Johnson, president pro tem of the board, announced in November.
Johnson said he is disappointed and would confer with trustees later to decide whether to offer the job to one of the other finalists.
A&M’s trustees unanimously picked Earls in September to become the 10th president of the 130-year-old school, replacing Dr. John Gibson.
Earls was appointed director of the Glenn Research Center two years ago. He manages a yearly budget of about $773 million and oversees a work force of about 3,200 government employees and contractors.
Woodrow Whitlow Jr., deputy director of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, has been appointed to succeed Earls at NASA Glenn.
