Harvard President Summers Marries Professor 

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.

Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers married Harvard professor Elisa New last weekend in a ceremony at Summers' on-campus residence.

Rabbi Norman Janis, a Harvard chaplain, performed the ceremony at Elmwood, the historic estate owned by the university.

New, 47, author of The Line's Eye: Poetic Experience, American Sight, teaches English and American literature and language at Harvard.

She earned her undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in 1980 and her doctorate from Columbia University in 1988. She was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania before she moved to Harvard.

Summers, 51, became Harvard's 27th president in 2001. He taught economics at Harvard in the 1980s before he moved to Washington and served as secretary of the treasury in the second Clinton administration.

A native of New Haven, Conn., Summers has twin daughters, Pam and Ruth, and a son, Harry, from a previous marriage.
