PEMBROKE, N.C. — Gov. Pat McCrory says lawmakers are not considering the consolidation of any University of North Carolina campuses as a way to save money.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that McCrory told the UNC Board of Governors Thursday that, while the possibility of consolidation no longer exists, he encouraged universities to find ways to combine resources and reduce overhead costs in a tight budget.
Last month, Forsyth County Republican Sen. Pete Brunstetter, co-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said one or two of the universities in the 17-campus system could be downsized or combined. Leaders from Fayetteville State University and UNC-Pembroke, among other campuses, expressed concerns about the possibility they could be on a closure list.
McCrory made his comments at UNC-Pembroke, where the UNC board held its monthly meeting.
