Abdul-Alim Named Spencer Fellow in Education Reporting

Diverse correspondent Jamaal Abdul-Alim is one of three accomplished journalists named 2013- 2014 Spencer Fellows in Education Reporting by the Columbia Journalism School.

Abdul-Alim, CQ Roll Call’s Lauren Smith Camera and Annie Murphy Paul, a magazine writer and book author, will receive a $75,000 stipend and expenses and will study with scholars throughout the Columbia campus. For the duration of the fellowship, Abdul-Alim, Camera and Paul will “pursue projects that will examine the impact of evaluating teacher preparation programs, the Obama administration’s competitive grant programs and why American undergraduates are not learning critical thinking skills in their college years,” according to a Columbia Journalism School news release.

The release also notes that Abdul-Alim “will use the fellowship to write about the national push to hold teacher preparation programs more accountable for student achievement.”
