Eastern Washington University Board Picks First Latino President
CHENEY, Wash.
Rodolfo Arevalo, provost at the University of Texas-Pan American, was named the 25th president of Eastern Washington University, becoming the school’s first Latino president, EWU’s board of trustees announced earlier this week.
His appointment takes effect April 1.
Arevalo succeeds Stephen M. Jordan, who left in June to accept the presidency of Metropolitan State College in Denver.
Arevalo has served as provost at Texas-Pan American since 1998.
The former chairman of the Department of Social Work at California State University, Los Angeles, Arevalo has extensive experience in the field of social work and has numerous published academic works.
Arevalo also served as provost and held a social work professorship at Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
He was dean of the Department of Politics and Public Administration, director of institutional research and dean of graduate studies and research at California State University, Stanislaus.
EWU Provost Brian Levin-Stankevich has served as EWU’s interim president since Jordan’s departure.
Arevalo holds a Ph.D. in educational administration and a master of social work degree from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas-Pan American.
