perfectly aligned with our missions to address the health disparities that exist for people of color and the disadvantaged.”

Milton Jones, chairman of the Meharry board of trustees, says a national search will begin immediately to find a replacement for Maupin. An interim president will be named if the search hasn’t found a replacement before Maupin’s departure.

“Meharry is grateful to Dr. John Maupin, who so capably has guided the college into a new era of excellence,” says Jones. “Dr. Maupin served Meharry for a 12-year term, which is quite rare in today’s academic world. With his guidance, Meharry is clearly stronger, academically and financially, than ever before.”

Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher has been serving as interim president of the Morehouse School of Medicine following the abrupt dismissal of Dr. James R. Gavin III in December 2004 (see Black Issues In Higher Education, February 10, 2005).
