National University of Singapore Opens Overseas Campus in India’s IT Capital

SINGAPORE

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has established the first overseas college branch in India with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, otherwise known as the Silicon Valley of India and home to over 1,000 information technology firms.

NUS students will have a chance to work full-time at multinational firms while studying part time in areas of science, technology and business. The new overseas college will be the first for graduate students. NUS expects to send its first batch of students to Bangalore by the end of the year. The NUS has five overseas campuses and this is only the second in Asia.

“By immersing our students in India’s IT hotspot, we hope to nurture innovative technology leaders and entrepreneurs with strong cross-cultural awareness and understanding,” said NUS President Professor Shih Choon Fong.

According to Professor Jacob Phang, CEO of NUS Enterprise: “We want to improve the quality of experience for our students. We want them to experience the diversity of the world.”

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions was witnessed by the President of India, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and NUS President Professor Shih Choon Fong.

Professor Shih described Dr Kalam as a visionary scientist and a social entrepreneur.

“President Kalam applied his scientific knowledge in service of society. This is evident in his role in founding the Society for Bio-Medical Technology. In particular, he used his special knowledge of space technology to develop braces made of light-weight advanced materials for disabled children. This reflects his compassion for the less fortunate,” said Shih.
