NORFOLK, Va – Norfolk State University is closing its troubled two-year nursing program.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the university’s Board of Visitors unanimously approved the move Friday. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the university’s accrediting agency must approve the decision. Eddie Moore Jr., the university’s new president, said last month that he intended to end the program.
In March, the Virginia Board of Nursing barred Norfolk State from accepting new students into the two-year program because of graduates’ low passing rates on a national licensing exam.
Norfolk State Provost Sandra DeLoatch told the board that about 100 students are enrolled in the program. She said it will close when those students finish, probably by summer.
