Southern University Board Member Quits

BATON ROUGE, La. ― Southern University Board of Supervisors member Calvin Braxton has stepped down from the board effectively immediately.

The move comes two days after his fellow board members voted against a contract extension for his close friend, Baton Rouge Chancellor James Llorens.

Board Chairwoman Bridget Dinvaut told The Advocate  that Braxton sent her a letter late Wednesday night resigning his position.

Braxton was one of the chancellor’s fiercest supporters. He was adamant that Llorens deserved a new contract of three or more years, rather than the one-year extension the board rejected during board meetings on Feb. 7 and again on Feb. 24.

Llorens’s contract expires on June 30.
