Just In Time for the
Black Panther Birthday Party

Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour, a narrative history
of Black Power in America
By Peniel E. Joseph
Henry Holt, $27.50

Dr. Peniel E. Joseph, a professor of African-American studies at State University of New York-Stony Brook, stands up for Huey P. Newton in this historical overview, concluding that the Black Power movement “accelerated America’s reckoning with its uncomfortable, often ugly, racial past.” The book has been generally well-reviewed, although conservative scholars like John McWhorter apparently aren’t impressed. “Black power taught us that there is something deeply ‘Black’ about being lustrously, implacably angry,” McWhorter countered.
