Prepping Students for Higher Education
A shortage of high school counselors is an issue that needs to be addressed (see “Education Department Plans to Move on Higher Ed Commission Advice,” Sept. 21.) Students are entering higher education without knowing the difference between high school and college. They have little or no idea about careers, majors, ethics or tools for being successful in higher education. I feel that some of these topics should be introduced to the students prior to enrolling in higher education. Counselors could play a bigger role in preparing the students if they were not overloaded. Perhaps more low-income students would apply to higher ed if they knew more of what to expect.
