Still a Diversity Leader

Still  a Diversity Leader

I have the privilege of overseeing the admissions process at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine. I read with interest, your article on Sept. 7, titled “Fiscal Management Plagues Top Producer of Minority Physicians.” It is absolutely true, that the university has undergone a time of turmoil as you described in your article.

However, I was very distressed with the use of the past tense when you stated, “…the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey had a solid reputation for being the place to study.”

Our school and university continue to have an outstanding track record in recruiting minority students. Despite the issues surrounding the university, this track record continues.

The UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine has been a leader in diversity for osteopathic medical students. Our school is the leader in recruitment of under-represented minority students in all osteopathic medical schools. We are proud of the fact that, despite the turmoil you described, last year 27 percent of our freshman class was made up of medically under-represented minority students.
