The Segregated Scholars: Black Social Scientists and the Creation of Black Labor Studies, 1890-1950

By Francille Rusan Wilson, Associate Professor of African-American studies, University of Maryland

The Segregated Scholars offers profiles of Black intellectuals in the early 1900s that “were bent on replacing myths and stereotypes regarding Black labor with rigorous research and analysis.” This list includes many female scholars who have been virtually ignored by the history books: Gertrude McDougald, Emma Shields Penn and Elizabeth Haynes among them. The book captures the history of the Black labor movement and examines the lives of early activists. The foreword by Harvard University sociologist William Julius Wilson is icing on the cake. The Segregated Scholars is groundbreaking, enlightening and relevant!
