A Helpful Hand to Parents

A Helpful Hand to Parents

I am thankful that so many colleges and universities are providing staff — and volunteers — to assist parents in playing a supportive role to their students (see “Handling ‘Helicopter Parents,’” Nov. 16). The term “helicopter parents” seems to have a negative connotation and should be replaced. It is helpful for parents to not only respect their adult children’s ability to make choices and exercise responsibility, but also to suggest options to them of which they may not be aware and which are suited to them individually. There are so many support services at a university that they can overload the student, who may not always remember to take advantage of them at a time of need.
