Chicago State University has received a $10 million grant from the Illinois General Assembly for the construction of a new convocation center.

The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University have received a five-year, $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a Center for the Study of Mind-Body Interactions and Health. The center, one of five being funded nationwide, will explore how the mind influences the development and recovery from various diseases.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s International Institute has been awarded $6.1 million in three-year grants from the National Resource Centers program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, to be used for programs linking Wisconsin to the world. Projects will range from the study of exotic languages to helping grade-school teachers.

Duke University’s new Superfund Basic Research Center has been given a five-year, $6 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to study how Superfund program-regulated toxins affect reproduction and interact with soil and water at contaminated sites.

The University of Houston-Downtown has received a 10-year, $3.9 million grant from the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation that will be used for teacher-education scholarships and lay the foundation for a proposed Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Tuskegee University is the lead institution in a collaboration of land-grant universities and community-based organizations that has been awarded a $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a Center for Minority Land and Community Security. The center will help people of color to maintain and increase their land holdings while developing local communities.

The Howard University Graduate School has won a $609,000 Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need award from the U.S. Department of Education to expand graduate opportunities for research and teaching in mathematics among under-represented groups.
