Where an Unwavering Focus on Students Empowers All

Founded in 1906 as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School in Carrollton, the University of West Georgia, a charter member of the University System of Georgia, is a comprehensive, residential institution providing selectively focused undergraduate and graduate education primarily to the people of west Georgia.

The university also is committed to regional outreach through a collaborative network of external degree centers, course offerings at off-campus sites, and an extensive program of continuing education for personal and professional development. Opportunities for intellectual and personal development are provided through quality teaching, scholarly inquiry, creative endeavor and service for the public good.

Scot LingrellVice President Scot Lingrell leads the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, comprised of 206 full-time and 55 part-time staff members across many departments, including the Counseling & Career Development Center, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Center for Student Involvement, the Enrollment Services Center, the Excel Center for Academic Success, and First-Year programs, among others.

Attentive to their very diverse student body at UWG, the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management has placed extra emphasis on creating an inclusive work environment through staff development. The division is guided
by the belief that a diverse student body should be matched by a diverse student affairs staff.

Lingrell shares, “We are committed to a hiring process that values diversity and inclusion, a new employee orientation program and training that instills these values in our employees, and organizational values that expect
inclusiveness as a core tenet of our practice.”

Alicia Caudill, associate vice president for student life and dean of students, says she believes it is West
Georgia’s student-centered approach to staff development, collaboration and departmental decisions that sets West
Georgia apart from other institutions.

Caudill states, the “division is an empowering place to work. For me, what makes it most impactful is our genuine
focus on our students and their stories.

“Our decisions, our collaboration and our dedication is to [create] an environment in which our students can be transformed by their experiences in and out of the classroom. To work with other colleagues in our division, who are equally committed to student success and a positive student experience, is challenging and invigorating.”

This unwavering focus on the inclusion of diverse staff and students is what makes the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the University of West Georgia one of this year’s “30+ Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs.”
