Tiger Woods Donates $10K to UMES for Golf Scholarship

Tiger Woods is donating $10,000 to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, helping the university create a scholarship in the name of trailblazing golfer Charlie Sifford. Maryland-Eastern Shore is the nation’s only historically Black university that offers a degree in professional golf management, and Sifford, who died last month at age 93, was the first Black golfer on the PGA Tour.

The scholarship will assist “students who demonstrate a passion for the game of golf … and who are from populations underrepresented in the golf industry.”

Sifford, who was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, won twice on the PGA Tour and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004. Woods, this generation’s most dominant golfer on the PGA Tour, has credited Sifford for clearing a path to professional golf for him.

“He fought, and what he did, the courage it took for him to stick with it and be out here to play, I probably wouldn’t be here, my dad wouldn’t have picked up the game, who knows if the clause would still exist or not,” Woods said in February of the PGA Tour’s “Caucasian Only” clause that was rescinded in 1961. “But he broke it down.”
